Teaching kids about Stranger Danger

One question often asked is what age do I teach my children about stranger danger. While there is no universal answer to this, most kids have heard about strangers by the age of 4 years of age. Because of this, I believe 4 years old is a good time to begin to discuss stranger danger with your children. It is best to teach them but not scare them. Easier said than done. One way is to ensure them it is ok to talk to new people as long as a parent or "safe" person is with them. If they ask why they can't talk to strangers by themselves, it is best to answer with something along the lines of there are some people in this world who doesn't care for the safety of children. Remember to be patient when teaching your kids about stranger danger. As with anything we teach our children, it may take time for them to understand the concept.
